MAIDS AND MADAMS

Mira Hamermesh has written and directed an observant and unbiased documentary about the relationship between white South African women and the black maids they employ. MAIDS AND MADAMS is as true a picture as we are likely to get of what life is like for the one million black women who work 10-12 hours a day, sometimes 7 days a week, for between 100 and 150 (35 Pounds) per month.

A cause with more direct appeal to the heart was aired in Mira Hamermesh's MAIDS AND MADAMS. An account of the exploitations of black female servants by their white employers in South Africa. It was a calm and understated film , showing that what appears monstrous from the outside, is an ordinary fact of life to insiders, and all the more effective for that.
